As a designer, I fully believe in decorating with the change of any season, but especially around the holidays. In my opinion, it’s the best part of the job! When the weather begins to shift outside, the interior of your home should subtly reflect those changes as well. However, transitioning your space for the fall season can be a little challenging if you’re not sure where to start. I know it can be tempting to consider the kitschy autumn decor you see everywhere. But trust me… More thoughtful holiday decorating choices will elevate your space. And it will allow you to use your decor for years to come – not just for this one season. Fall decorating is all about adding warmth, creating an inviting space, and of course, expressing your own style. So today I’m sharing how to tastefully decorate for fall. Plus, I’m bringing you all the fall decorating inspiration you need to make your home classic and cozy for the autumn season!
My secret to tastefully decorating for fall is using colors and items already found in nature. Think: earth tones and natural materials like pinecones, wheat, wicker, and greenery.
A fool-proof fall decor tip: Decorate your entryway for fall with a wheat wreath, or two. And line your porch steps with pumpkins. Your guests will be greeted by an array of inviting autumn shades and warmth,
When in doubt, layer pumpkins. An assortment of pumpkins in a range of hues is a failsafe way to transition your home for the fall season. Place them on your kitchen island, bookshelf, or a coffee table for a fun and festive look.
I often run to our local nursery for our festive pumpkins and gourds. Looking for sage-colored heirloom pumpkins, white Cinderella pumpkins, or tiger stripe pumpkins. Try stacking them on top of each other for added visual interest and dimension.
Fall florals, foliage, and dried greenery can also instantly transform a corner inside your home. A blend of deep burgundy flowers and autumn foliage in earthy hues from makes the perfect addition to any fall decor.
How to tastefully decorate for fall is all about the accents and keeping it clean & simple. More isn’t always better, ya know? Properly layering pillows, throws, and textures is my go-to fall decor trick — all of which can be updated from season to season. Start with a base of neutral throw pillows and add one or two patterned styles of blankets or pillows in warm hues that embody the season.
Look for items that inspire that hygge home feeling. I use candles to create a warm glow and intimate atmosphere. And incorporate styling touches like bowls filled with fall fruits or vegetables also visually communicates the change in season. (Perfect for the kitchen or dining area!)
Don’t go overboard. Keep it simple and clean by incorporating thoughtful touches of pattern and color.
